Solar Installation Timeline

Solar Panel Installation...how long does it take?

On average the turnaround time for installing a solar system on a residential property is 30 to 60 days from starting the process. Usually it takes about 7 to 10 days for site survey, 2 to 4 weeks for permitting, 14 days for interconnection approval, and 1 to 2 days to install the system!

How long until they are up and running after installation?

Depending on your utility, it can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks to get a solar system approved for operation after installation. Two things need to take place before a customer is allowed Permission To Operate (PTO):

1. Inspection by the municipality (usually a couple weeks after installation) to make sure the system is up to code.

2. Connection of the system to the grid by the utility. (this allows for Net Metering*)

What is Net Metering?

*Net Metering is when your system produces more energy than you use, so the excess is sent back to the grid through a bidirectional meter or "solar meter" usually installed at interconnection. Depending on the rate schedule you choose or are assigned after installation of your solar system, you can sell back the excess energy back to the power company or receive credits for the excess production. This allows you to use the energy your solar system produces to power your home day or night, the only difference being that at night you pull energy from the grid and use the credits you produced during the day to power your home.
